Risk Assessment Model for SPP-preprava,a. s.

5.10.2007

YMS, a. s, a member of the YMS & GCWare Group, carried out, in cooperation with Žilina University in Žilina, a research and development task for SPP-preprava, a.s., focused on examining, proposing, and drawing up a risk assessment model on the linear part of gas transportation pipelines.

This task is a part of the systematic development of a complex system of risk assessment and management in the transportation system that has been on-going in SPP-preprava, a. s. for several years.
Pipeline integrity management and safe gas transportation are among the main objectives of every gas company. It is the understanding of the risks of safe gas transportation and recognition of weak spots on the pipelines that may prevent tragic accidents, protect human lives, and last but not least, save financial costs and prevent expenditures on reconstruction, compensation, and remediation of incurred damage.

In the process of carrying out the research and development tasks, SPP-preprava, a.s. obtained a mathematical model by which it is able to identify risks at random spots on the pipelines and assess possible impacts on inhabitants living in the vicinity, the environment, and financial losses in case of a pipeline accident. The risk assessment model is harmonised with ASME B31.8S international standards requirements.

As an inseparable part of the project, the task solution included implementation of a pilot project, utilizing the model in three sections of a pipeline with a total length of about 70 km. The goal of the pilot project was to verify, in selected areas, whether the individual parameters of the risk assessment model had been correctly set, presented actual results of the assessed risk, and, where necessary, recommended adjustments of the model parameters.
